I am Notoriously Unreliable

Hello everyone.  It's been a while, and I am trying to decide what to write next, and also if the pen name of OJ Wolfsmasher should continue to write things or be taken out back and disposed of like yesterday's donut box.

Maybe it's the long cold winter.  Maybe it's my run-on sentences.  Maybe it's my determination to try and be happy.  I don't know what's preventing me from deciding on a direction.  … Register or log in to access full content

First Half of “Mister Reynolds Makes His Case”

This story is due out in April.  I am still working on the second half though I finally got the rough draft of the second half completed.  My difficulty was in moving the story where it needed to go while keeping everyone in character.  I would love to hear your reaction to what I have so far.

Or, if you are a purist, wait a few weeks and get the whole thing on your Kindle.… Register or log in to access full content

Not The Story I Expected To Write

Sometimes I know nothing about the nature of a story when I start writing it other than a couple characters and a plot point.  Until about the time I finished the rough draft for Get Acquainted with Mr. Grief, I didn't have any idea where it was leading beyond the first few scenes.  You'll be happy to know that last week sometime a plot structure did actually begin to develop in my head.  … Register or log in to access full content

For My Next Trick, A Serialized Novel

In honor of the wonderful upcoming month of November (O please get here soon), otherwise known as National Novel Writing Month, my next project is totally going to be a novel. Because I love you, my dear readers, so very much, I've decided to let you have a say in WHICH novel I release in easily-digestible e-book installments.  This will technically be my debut novel, and the course of my entire writing career is hanging in the balance, so "choose wisely."

(I'm bringing this up because I honestly am having a beast of a time deciding which way to's a genetic thing.)

Your choices:

1) As Far As You Know -- In 2005 (seven years ago!), I actually wrote a Nanowrimo novel. … Register or log in to access full content

What’s in Yo He-ead?

You should see my typing posture* right now.  I'm at my kitchen table, my legs are spread and on two separate chairs, I am leaning way back (i.e., slouching), and the chair is making an imprint of vertical wooden lines on my poor back.  It is 3am.  I made a cup of coffee, and should have made a pot.  Live and learn and make another cup, I guess.  Also, I'm not going to explain why I'm up so early/late.  … Register or log in to access full content

An Introduction to Shadow, Second Installment

Chapter Five

Malcolm felt a shiver delicately trace his spine as the voice continued.  “Oh, and that little Chinese dude you just saw and didn’t see…that was Lo Chen.  He’s another one of those twerp Awakened.  You know, you were pretty smart to steer clear of those bozos.  They’re nothing but trouble and lies.  I bet they told you some pretty hairy stuff about the Fallen, didn’t they?”

Malcolm could only nod.… Register or log in to access full content

Chapter Seven – The Mysterious Passion of the Crusty Hermit

The sock monkeys and the blue toupees had a long-standing feud for as far back as any could remember. It had started because either a sock monkey had sneezed and used a blue toupee as a handkerchief or a blue toupee had borrowed five bucks from a sock monkey and never paid it back. No one precisely remembered which.… Register or log in to access full content

Chapter Five – Sock Monkeys in the Blue Toupee Jungle of Death

The jungle spread out before Suzie, Frank, Frank’s Colon, Flippy and Melvin like a giant sock and underwear drawer, where everything had just been tossed in, was not laid carefully in rows, and the underwear was not folded just so.

“Well, well”, said Frank, “The Blue Toupee Jungle. As I live and breathe.”

“That’s a jungle, all right,” said Suzie.… Register or log in to access full content

Two More: An Excerpt

I'm working on a new story. It's called "Two More" and its about a down-on-his luck man who  meets a mysterious stranger at a bar after closing time. The stranger offers him everything he's ever wanted ... for a price. Here's an excerpt...

Two More (by Joseph E. Shaw)

Mike Pierce spent the final moments of the second-to-last day of his life on a stool at the Friendly Stop Bar & Grille.

Comments on “An Introduction to Shadow”

I am extremely excited about the book I'm working on right now called "An Introduction to Shadow".   It's about a homeless boy named Malcolm who is saved at the last minute from a monster attack by a demon hunter: one of the Awakened.  He is introduced into the world of the Awakened, those who walk in the shadows and fight against the Fallen, monsters whose only mission is to steal, kill and destroy. … Register or log in to access full content
