Flash Fiction Writing Prompt:
Geoff listened in stealth mode from the opposite end of the cafeteria table as his Christian friend, Susan, was pummeled by question after question from a group of their mutual friends. Unlike Susan, they had exposure to all the common New Atheist objections. She had grown up on “God said it, I believe it, that settles it.” He debated whether or not to butt in.
Geoff decided to hold back and see how it played out. A particularly energetic atheist named Richard was expounding on the way faith systems oppress science. He was using the exhausted story of Galileo and the Roman Catholic church to prove his point. Geoff held his tongue, for he knew every hole in that story, and waited to see how Susan handled it. She didn’t handle it well. Geoff almost choked on his Cheetos when he heard her say, “I hope you have fun in hell with Galileo,” as she picked up her tray and stormed off. “Oh boy,” mumbled Geoff as he followed after her.
